CONCEPT
Badlands is a clean-air salon and barbershop that provides our clientele with a modern and sophisticated approach to cutting and color services. Our focus is to provide people with a safe space to express themselves - with non-gendered services, clean styling products, and nontoxic color. Our space is on the ground floor with double-doors and is wheelchair accessible. We use Afterworld Organics styling products, which are non-toxic, chemical free, and are packaged in glass. Afterword products were created and formulated by Badlands owner Deirdre Novella, and are sold in over 300 salons across the country.. Products can be purchased in-salon or online.
While creating an inclusive space for all of our clients, we place emphasis on gender neutral styles; expertly blending progressive techniques with traditional favorites. The Badlands team is trained in all aspects of hair care, specializing in fantasy color, bleach and tone, highlights & balayage, precision cutting and razoring techniques, barbering, clipper cutting, and fades. Each stylist also attends master education classes at Badlands to perfect their skills.
We donate monthly to the Ali Forney queer homeless youth shelter, and provide volunteer cutting services to immobile queer elders upon request.
DEIRDRE NOVELLA
Deirdre opened Badlands Salon & Barber in Park Slope, Brooklyn in 2012. Her goal was to create a safe venue where everyone can feel comfortable and confident about getting their hair done. After spending years doing free-lance hairstyling and feeling caught in a grind of trying to market an un-attainable image, Deirdre yearned to have her own salon space to work one-on-one with people— helping them to feel good about expressing who they are.
